Jade
Female Rough Coat Red and White Border Collie
(Retired)
Jade is the matriarch and true cornerstone of our program. Jade comes from our Great Uncle's breeding program. Our great uncle is an old cowboy hermit, still working sale barns in his 80s.
Well, his life earned skills and knowledge came together to create THE BEST dog either my husband or I have ever owned. The first night we met, we talked for hours about: Horses, mechanics on vehicles, and Border Collies. My husband and I had owned several Border Collies. But one Thanksgiving my Mother In Law showed me a picture of these red and white pups and I just KNEW I had to have one. I had never had a red and white, but I had long yearned for one. We went to meet them and my husband and I agreed we needed the only female, Jade.
Jade was actually RAISED IN AN APPARTMENT!! Many folks feel the need to define, and occasionally defend, our breed but the truth is they don't all need a 100 acre ranch. Jade's temperament and ability to switch back and forth from city living to country loving is the reason we started our own program. Our dogs can work your ranch, raise your kids, or be your best city living buddy- and that is a hard find! Jade spent a total of 4 years, 2 of them her primary years, living in an apartment with us. Today, she lives on our ranch and enjoys spending her days watching our stock and property. But she comes inside every night and lays by her person, my husband, and enjoys the peaceful time of just being a companion.
While our dogs are willing to enjoy, love, and listen to the whole family, in typical to the Border Collie fashion, they have a favorite. You could divide our whole pack to "His and Her" dogs. Our dogs love each of us, and they love our daughter too, but they have a favorite and will default to that person. I see this as a very special bond, knowing who their person is and listening to them above all else, while still retaining the ability to work and adore anyone in the family. Despite our winning ribbons, trophies, and hearts of many of my friends and clients, Jade is my husband's dog. And I think it is really cool that she has devoted so much of her life to me, despite me being second to her dad.
Jade is an absolute family favorite at every gathering we take her to. She will fetch anything you throw from now until forever. I often have to take the stick away from the family to give her a break lol. She loves running round bale lines, playing basketball, performing tricks, and watching the kids.
Jade is also an extremely intuitive worker. While she never had any formal training, she has helped me gather and put away countless strays- some of them not even ours. One of my favorite stories is when we were at the Roman Nose Hills Trail Ride and the cattle got out of their pasture and were ransacking our camp. Cowboys, ropes, horses, whips, you name it could not get the bull to move. We dumped Jade out of the pickup, probably 50 yards away and pointed toward the bull and the direction that we wanted that bull to go. Jade jumped up, grabbed him by the nose (and pissed him off enough to get him to move) then she pushed that bull all by herself back to his pasture. The goat story is also pretty hilarious, but lets just suffice it to say that our first day with goats was completely saved by Jade.
Jade has proven to carry on exactly what we loved about her:
They do whatever it is that makes you happy. "You want to work stock, lets work stock. You want to throw a frisbee, I'll chase a frisbee. You want to watch Netflix and chill, I will chill."
These dogs live to serve you and will adapt to whatever that is if you make it clear to them. They love to play through adulthood, but have an excellent off switch.
Jade is retired from breeding and enjoys spending her days playing and working on our ranch, but her legacy lives on through her pups:
